The Optimization of the Electrocoagulation of Palm Oil Mill Effluent with a Box-Behnken Design

Abstract: Unmanageable industrial wastewater will have an impact on the environment. One of the alternative wastewater treatment technologies is electrocoagulation. This study investigates the effects of voltage, time, and NaCl concentrations on wastewater through electrocoagulationspecifically, how they affect the total suspended solid (TSS), the total dissolved solid (TDS), and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction of palm oil mill effluent (POME)-with response surface methodology. An iron electrode was used with… Show more

“…Alum and ferric chloride-based salts such as alum, aluminium chloride, ferric chloride, and ferric sulphate are frequently used as traditional coagulants (Bektas, 2004). Alum and ferric can have good coagulant properties (Lubis et al, 2019).…”

“…A three-step treatment process of aerobic activated sludge biological pre-oxidation (ASBO), coagulation/sedimentation, and photo-oxidation through a photo-Fenton (PF) reaction has yielded BOD concentrations less than 150 mg/L at the effluent (Silva et al, 2017). Nurrohman and Wardjito (2016) reported satisfactory results from combining physical and chemical treatments to remove low biodegradable contaminants using a flotation and coagulation process, whereas Lubis et al (2019) removed more than 90% of COD in low biodegradable wastewater using electrocoagulation. Recently, there has been increased use of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to remove organic contaminants from wastewater.…”

“…Factors that influence EC efficiency include electrolysis time, current density, electrode type, interelectrode spacing, and the pH of the electrolyte [9]. Response surface optimization is a widely used method to investigate optimal process variables of EC when aiming to obtain maximum treatment efficiency [10].…”
