Introduction: The global estimate of the aging population is progressively increasing in low and middle-income countries and this is accompanied by the limitations associated with the need for equitable and efficient healthcare delivery among this dire population. Unfortunately, despite the increasing numbers, the adoption of mobile phones is not balanced in the different populations with research showing young persons’ adoption rate is higher than that of elderly persons. Objective: This current study was conducted to identify elderly people’s perceptions of the use of mobile phones to support the self-management of long-term illnesses at Kiruddu National Referral Hospital. Methods: This descriptive-cross-sectional design study was conducted on a sample population of 30 elderly individuals older than 60 years admitted at the outpatient department of Kiruddu National Referral Hospital, Kampala, Uganda. We conducted face-to-face interviews following an interview guide and one focus group discussion. We later used a feature mobile phone and a tablet mobile phone to assess the individual ease of use of each device. The audio recordings were professionally transcribed and transcripts were coded into NVIVO version 12 analysis software for thematic analysis Results: Almost all of the respondents who visited the facility had an ailment that hindered their full utilization of the mobile phone to support their self-care. This together with other factors like financial constraints, lack of support from the health workers on how to use mobile phones to support health, inadequate support from the facility, and cost of mobile data among others. Background and Conclusion: This study provides empirical evidence that there is hardly a known mobile phone adoption model to enable policymakers, systems developers, and health workers to promote the elderly population’s use of mobile phones to manage their long-term illnesses in Uganda. A adoção em massa de smartphones está remodelando o mercado de saúde digital. Entre as soluções tecnológicas empregadas nesse mercado, existem aquelas específicas para agendamento de consultas médicas. No entanto, observamos que as soluções existentes ainda são centradas no profissional. Neste trabalho, primeiro (i) categorizamos os modelos de agendamento existentes. Em seguida, (ii) apresentamos um estudo de caso do aplicativo móvel MedBe, que adota o modelo de Agendamento 4.0 para o agendamento de consultas centrado no paciente. Tal estudo se deu baseado na Teoria do Foco no Cliente, que leva em conta a satisfação do cliente durante todo o desenvolvimento e avaliação do software. Nesse contexto, empregamos a técnica de autoavaliação UXUG-AP e uma pesquisa quantitativa usando um questionário baseado nos indicadores e sentenças TAM. Por fim, (iii) abordamos as implicações de segurança digital no modelo de Agendamentos 4.0 sob a ótica da Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados (LGPD). Nossos resultados demonstram que o MedBe atende 84% dos itens da técnica UXUG-AP. Em termos de usabilidade, nossa pesquisa mostra que 68,6% dos participantes consideram o MedBe fácil de usar e 62,9% discordam que usar o aplicativo requer muito esforço mental. Por fim, propomos e implementamos novas funcionalidades para a conformidade do MedBe com a LGPD.

The use of assistive technology (AT) devices enhances older adults’ function in daily activities. However, the lack of awareness of AT among potential AT users has been identified as a major barrier to its adoption. This study aimed to assess the quality of the Mi Guía de Asistencia Tecnológica (MGAT) web app, which provides information on AT, from the perspective of older Latinos with physical disabilities, and to explore their experience using the MGAT. We employed a convergent parallel mixed-method design involving 12 older Latinos living in Puerto Rico. In Phase I, the researchers trained the participants in the use of the MGAT. In Phase II, participants were encouraged to use it for 30 days. In Phase III, the participants completed the User Mobile Application Rating Scale and individual interviews, analyzed with descriptive statistics and a directed thematic content analysis. The quality of the MGAT was rated high in both the objective (mean = 3.99; SD = 0.7) and subjective (mean = 4.13; SD = 1.1) domains. Qualitative data revealed the MGAT was accessible, usable, desirable, credible, useful, and valuable to increasing older Latinos’ AT knowledge, function, and autonomy. The MGAT has the potential to increase AT awareness and adoption among older adults.
