The Ophthalmic Performance of Hydrogel Contact Lenses Loaded with Silicone Nanoparticles

Abstract: In this study, silicone nanoparticles (SiNPs) were prepared from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) via the sol-gel process. The resultant SiNPs were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). These SiNPs were then blended with 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NVP) before polymerizing into hydrogel contact lenses. All hydrogels were subject to characterization, includ… Show more

“…Figure 4 shows the FTIR spectra of HEMA, NVP, and poly(HEMA- co -NVP)-SNPs, where the peaks of C–H groups (2878 cm −1 ) and C=O groups (1720 cm −1 ) were observed. Additionally, in SNP-loaded lenses, the peaks of Si–O–Si group in SiO 2 were appeared at 720 and 1068 cm −1 while the C–N group of NVP were observed in 1150 cm −1 [ 6 , 15 ]. The characteristic peaks of C–C double bond were absent from the infrared spectrum of the resultant lens, indicating the successful synthesis of the hydrogel.…”

“…The oxygen permeability of the control and drug-laden contact lenses was determined at 100% relative humidity using a Cretech permeometer by Rehder Development Company (CA, USA). 39,40 The flat cell was stabilized and the intensity was measured with dark current to determine the oxygen permeability of the contact lens.…”

“…In another study, Meola et al [13] used Capmul ® MCM in the preparation of silica-lipid hybrid microparticles to improve the dissolution and oral delivery of simvastatin. 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) represents one of the most commonly used synthetic monomers for the preparation of crosslinked polymers and it has been widely used in many pharmaceutical applications such as soft contact lenses [14] and drug carriers [15]. The easiness of preparation, the flexibility in modifying the polymer structure, the ability to control the drug release and protect it from degradation as well as the polymer swelling behaviour are all features encouraged its use in many biomedical and drug delivery applications.…”
