The Open Grid Computing Environments collaboration: portlets and services for science gateways

Abstract: We review the efforts of the Open Grid Computing Environments collaboration. By adopting a generalthree-tiered architecture based on common standards for portlets and Grid Web Services, we can deliver numerous capabilities to science gateways from our diverse constituent efforts. In this paper, we discuss our support for standards-based Grid portlets using the Velocity development environment. Our Grid portlets are based on abstraction layers provided by the Java CoG kit, which hide the differences of differen… Show more

“…Traditionally, this is done in an adhoc fashion by the system administrator and requires a significant amount of knowledge and labor. Web portals (Open Grid Computing Environments [1], GridSphere [2], JBoss [3], etc.) provide basics frameworks for account management within the browser interface.…”

“…On the other hand, grid portal developments on uPortal also exist. For example, the Open Grid Computing Environment (OGCE) [18] has been developed using both the GridSphere and uPortal portlet containers. It should be noted that GridPort has now been absorbed within the OGCE project.…”

“…The uptake of service-oriented computing by the Grid community (e.g., Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA)) and the call for service oriented science [5] justify our assumption that collaboration tools will be increasingly available as services through standardized interfaces. As scientists apply collaboration services in their individual prefered ways-some favor email, other instant messaging-we need to collect data from a heterogenous set of sources (1). These sources also include data on the use of grid resources.…”
