The oomycete Lagenisma coscinodisci hijacks host alkaloid synthesis during infection of a marine diatom

Abstract: Flagellated oomycetes frequently infect unicellular algae, thus limiting their proliferation. Here we show that the marine oomycete Lagenisma coscinodisci rewires the metabolome of the bloom-forming diatom Coscinodiscus granii, thereby promoting infection success. The algal alkaloids β-carboline and 4-carboxy-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-β-carboline are induced during infection. Single-cell profiling with AP-MALDI-MS and confocal laser scanning microscopy reveals that algal carbolines accumulate in the reproductive f… Show more

“…Several factors, e.g. chemical defense, genotype adaptation, morphological barriers (frustule thickness, pore size), are known to interfere in host-parasite interaction (Raven and Waite 2004;Pohnert 2005;Pancic et al 2019;Vallet et al 2019;Zhang et al 2017). In crossinfection trials, the spread and rate of infection were noted to be different when two strains of D. perforans s.l.…”

“…Fungal and Amoeba parasites associated with algae cultures are one of the factors related to the regulation of the algae population. These parasites have been shown to have detrimental effects on algal blooms, especially in monocultures, by preventing the algae from proliferating (Carney and Lane, 2014; Vallet et al, 2019). However, there is still a lack of extensive information on their role in algal production.…”

“…This approach can provide in-depth insights into the physiological responses to (a)biotic stresses, thereby revealing metabolic changes in algal populations (Baumeister et al, 2019). Knowledge about the metabolic processes also allows for the identification of pathogenicity mechanisms (Vallet et al, 2019). Common metabolomics approaches are suitable for tracking the metabolic changes in cultures and complex heterogeneous plankton communities, but they average thousands of cells and neglect cellular individuality.…”
