The OLYMPUS Experiment at DESY

Abstract: Recent determinations of the proton electric to magnetic elastic form factor ratio from polarization transfer measurements at Jefferson Lab indicate an unexpected and dramatic discrepancy with the elastic form factor ratio obtained using the Rosenbluth separation technique in unpolarized cross section measurements. This discrepancy has been explained as the effect of twophoton exchange beyond the usual one-photon exchange approximation in the calculation of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section.… Show more

“…Including the best hadronic calculations available yields consistency between the two techniques, and good separation of G E and G M up to high Q 2 [13,15]. Comparisons of electron-proton and positron-proton scattering can be used to isolate TPE contributions [51], and a series of such measurements are currently planned or underway [52][53][54].…”

“…Cross sections in the kinematical range of 0.5 < Q 2 < 2.0 (GeV/c) 2 and 0.2 < ε < 0.9 can be measured. The third is the OLYMPUS experiment [50], where the DORIS lepton storage ring at DESY will be used to extract the ratio R e + e − from Q 2 = 0.6 (GeV/c) 2 and ε = 0.90, to Q 2 = 2.2 (GeV/c) 2 and ε = 0.35.…”

“…The accumulation of data in three experiments aimed at measuring R to a high degree of precision has been completed to date. This are the experiment described here and performed at the VEPP-3 storage ring (Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, Novosibirsk, Russia), the OLYMPUS experiment [47] at the DORIS storage ring (DESY, Hamburg, Germany), and the experiment with the PROTON FORM FACTORS AND TWO-PHOTON EXCHANGE 397 CLAS detector [48] at the TJNAF (Newport News, USA). The Q 2 and ε kinematical regions covered in these experiments are shown in Fig.…”
