The Ocean Sub-Bottom Seismometer System Installed in Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 581C, Leg 88: A Technical Review

Abstract: A permanent Ocean Sub-bottom Seismometer (OSS IV) designed and built by the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics was successfully installed in DSDP Hole 581C during Leg 88. The system consists of a borehole package, electromechanical cable, recorder package, recovery rope, and buoy. The borehole package contains vertical and horizontal geophones, tilt meters, and a temperature sensor. Signals from these sensors are multiplexed, digitized, and telemetered through the electromechanical cable to the recorder package ne… Show more

“…The northwestern OSS was developed in the Hawaiian Institute of Geophysics. Installed in September 1982 to work at least till May 1983, it had a recording pass-band from 0.03 to 40Hz (Byrne et al 1987;Harris et al 1988).…”

“…The equilibrium temperature might be 10°C or more higher (Byrne et al, 1987), but preliminary estimates suggest values of 5° to 6°C, placing the true transformation temperature at about 42° to 43°C in rocks having about 15% silica. This value is in good agreement with previous estimates for the transformation in a non-uplifted Pliocene sequence offshore California (Keller and Isaacs, 1985).…”
