The occurrence of placental abruption in Norway 1967‐1991

Abstract: Inspite of an increasing CS rate, an increasing proportion of PA was noted from 1967 through 1991. The proportion was lowest for birth order two and increased by maternal age. To an increasing extent, PA births were centralized. SGA, prematurity and asphyxia were major problems associated with PA. A tendency towards larger infants and a decreasing relative risk of PA in SGA-births might be attributable to improvements in antenatal care.

“…However, in previous studies lack of data did not allow subdivision into all categories of PIH. The result in the present study that small newborn size was associated with AP is also consistent with earlier studies (18,19).…”

“…4 Maternal hypertension especially preeclampsia and eclampsia are major risk factors for abruption placenta. 3,5,8,10 Patients with severe preeclampsia have been reported to have a relative risk of 3.8 and those with chronic hypertension with superimposed preeclampsia have a relative risk of 2.8 for placental abruption. 5 In a study conducted by Baha M Sibai et al 11 in 1984 on 303 preeclampsia women, abruptio placentaee was noted in 5.6% women.…”

“…One major antenatal complication of preeclampsia is abruptio placentae, which has serious implication on the health of both the mother and the foetus, which may result in maternal as well as perinatal mortality. 2,3 Abruptio placentae is defined as the separation of placenta from its implantation site before birth of the foetus. The initial event in abruptio placentae is bleeding into the decidua basalis.…”
