The Occurrence, Ecology and Life History of Tigriopus fulvus (Fischer)

Abstract: The peculiar and exacting environment of Tigriopus fulvus is discussed and a census of Tigriopus from a series of pools in the Isle of Man is given.Experiments have been made determining the resistance of Tigriopus to desiccation and its revival in favourable circumstances. The life history has been worked out, times taken in development noted, and the various stages compared and contrasted with those described by Guiglia.Sex can be determined at the fourth copepodid stage. Females are normally fertilised as fi… Show more

“…In contrast to Longipedia, the corresponding part in Tisbe jurcata (Fig. 9D) is remarkably deformed, though the two elements are retained; the coxal spine is represented by a stout process in the first stage and develops in the later stages into a toothed strong process called "gnathobase", to which the other elements, a spine and an accessory small spine, are attached (see Fraser, 1936;Johnson & Olson, 1943;Krishnaswamy, 1955;Bresciani, 1960;Ummerkutty, 1960;El-Maghraby, 1964;Haq, l965b;Ito, 1970Ito, , 1975Ito & Takashio, 1931;Carter & Bradford, 1972;Schminke, 1932;Diaz & Evans, 1933;Bourguet, 1936). Such coxal armature with gnathobase as in Tisbe is common among other harpacticoids.…”
