The O K−2V spectrum of CO: the influence of the second core-hole

Abstract: A K−2V photoelectron spectrum of the CO molecule, showing several core-ionized core-excited states, has been recorded and the different spectral features have been interpreted in terms of their direct or conjugate nature.

“…Nevertheless, some of these final states are meta-stable with a shallow potential well like L −2 4sσ or L −2 3dσ and other (L −2 4pσ,π and L −2 4pσ,π) are dissociative. A similar behavior was found for the O K −2 Ryd states in CO, 33 which can be compared with the molecule CNe 2+ . From these results we conclude that double-core-hole Rydberg excitations tend to be close to the borderline between metastable and dissociative so that each state has to be individually considered.…”

“…Spectral bandwidth has been measured allowing to determine the lifetime of the DCH states. This technique has been applied to the neon atom [15], the H2O molecule [16], the CS2 and SF6 molecules [17], the HCl molecule [18], the O K -2 CO2 molecule [19].…”
