The nutritional value of low lathyrogenic Lathyrus (Lathyrus sativus) for growing chicks

Abstract: 1. The feeding value of new low β-N-oxalyl-amino-Lalanine (BOAA) lines of Lathyrus sativus (lathyrus) and the benefits of dehulling the seed or of pre-adapting chicks to lathyrus-based diets were examined in several experiments. 2. Chicks fed on diets containing 400 g/kg of the low (1.3 g BOAA/kg seed) and medium (2.2 g BOAA/kg seed) BOAA lines did not differ (P>0.05) in weight gain (WG) or in apparent fat and protein digestibilities compared to birds fed on a wheat-based diet. 3. Consumption of 600 g low BOAA… Show more

“…Hence the good balance in the TSFA/ TUFA and x-6/x-3 fatty acids ratios of the Vicia species studied may help us correct this current balance in the western diet. It has been observed that the processing and cooking of legumes do not affect the fatty acid composition, while antinutritional compounds present in legumes are removed or degraded [27][28][29], thus making cooked legumes a possible source of important fatty acids.…”

“…The utilization of grass pea seeds as a feed crop has been limited partly due to their content of antinutritional substances, mainly proteases inhibitors (Roy et al, 1975;Weder, 1981;Rotter et al, 1991). In order to eliminate these substances the grass pea seeds can be toasted, autoclaved, boiled in water or extruded (Liener, 1983;Rotter, 1990).…”

“…Protein digestibility of Lathyrus-containing diets was lower than in the control diet and some birds given the diet with higher level of Lathyrus showed ruffl ed feathers, stunted growth and abnormal gait in comparison with the chickens fed the control diet. Low et al (1990) and Rotter et al (1991) using Lathyrus seeds of low or medium ODAP content grown in Canada at a level 800 g/kg or 200, 400, 600 and 800 g/kg diet reported depressed performance and dry matter digestibility only at the higher levels of inclusion, but none of the classical symptoms of lathyrism or increased mortality.…”

“…Latif et al (1976) reported that the AME value of L. sativus for poultry was 11.3 MJ/kg DM, while Chowdhury et al (2005) estimated it at 12 MJ/kg. Low et al (1990) did not fi nd any symptoms of lathyrism in chickens fed a diet with 82% of L. sativus, while Rotter et al (1991) reported that performance of broiler chickens decreased with increased L. sativus levels in the diet.…”
