Earwax is a normal product of the ear, which protects the skin of the ear from water, dirt dust and infection. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of earwax on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli isolated from skin and stool respectively. Bacteriological investigations were carried out using culture and morphological characteristics, conventional biochemical tests and antibiotic susceptibility testing of both earwax and conventional antibiotics against the presumptive isolates. Occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus (58.3%) and Escherichia coli (45.8%) in skin and stool samples were respectively determined based on cultural and morphological characteristics. Conventional biochemical tests were carried out on the 14 and 10 presumptive Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli isolates and then 10 and 8 presumptive isolates were detected respectively. The antibacterial activity of the test agent was determined using the agar well diffusion technique; five different concentrations (20% v/v, 40% v/v, 60% v/v, 80% v/v, and 100% v/v) of the test agents were evaluated against the bacterial isolates. The earwax showed antibacterial activity against both isolates (except the 20% v/v for Staphylococcus aureus) at all concentrations used with antibacterial activity directly proportional to earwax concentration and a better antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (zone of inhibition 20mm) aureus than Escherichia coli. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was carried out on the 10 (41.7%) and 8 (33.3%) presumptive isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli respectively based on Kirby Bauer method. Highest rate of susceptibilities of the Staphylococcus aureus isolates to antibiotics were observed in Erythromycin (100%), while for Escherichia coli were observed in Erythromycin and Levofloxacin (100%). Meanwhile, highest rate of resistant to Staphylococcus aureus isolates were observed in Gentamicin (100%) while for Escherichia coli was observed in Amoxicillin (100%). This study shows that earwax plays a critical role in the fight against infectious microorganisms as some of the antibiotics.

Background: Childhood hearing impairment is a significant cause of disability and affects not only the language development of the child but also, can affect in child's social, emotional, cognitive and educational development. As well, hearing impairment can increase the negative attitude and burnout of their mothers. Aim: This study was carried out to assess the effect of empowerment program on reducing burnout for mothers having children suffering from hearing impairment. Research Design: A quasi-experimental research design was used. Setting: The study was conducted at the Hearing and Speech Institute in Embaba, Nile Corniche, Cairo, Egypt. Sample: A purposive sample composed of 220 mothers having children with hearing impairment. Tools: Four tools were used in this study: Tool one: An interview questionnaire which consisted of the following: Part I: a) Characteristics of studied mothers. b) Characteristics of studied children. c) Past and present medical history of child and family. Part II: Mothers' knowledge about hearing impairment. Tool II: Mothers' Attitude Likert Scale regarding their children with hearing impairment. Tool III: Mothers' Reported Practice Likert Scale. Tool IV: Mothers' Burnout regarding their children with hearing impairment. Results:The current study revealed that, 61.4% of studied mothers had poor knowledge, 58.2% of them had a negative attitude, 61.8% of them had inadequate reported practices and 69.1% of studied mothers had high burnout regarding hearing impairment at preprogram, which changed to 87.3% of them had good knowledge, 85% of them changed to positive attitude, 86.4% of them had adequate reported practices and 74.1% changed to low burnout at post program. Conclusion: The empowerment program improved the studied mothers' good knowledge, positive attitude, adeq uate reported practices and decreased mothers' burnout about hearing impairment of their children. As well, there were negative correlations between mothers' total burnout, knowledge, attitude and reported practices about hearing impairment. Recommendations: Mothers of children with hearing impairment should be provided with continuous workshops about hearing impairment and its management. Children suffering from hearing impairment should have periodical hearing assessment.

The present study is focused on the assessment of the antimicrobial activity of cerumen and antibiotics against bacteria isolated from ear pus samples. Thus, a total of 50 ear pus samples were collected from infected patients using sterile swabs and were screened using pure culture techniques. Total of 04 different bacterial isolates were identified while, the prevalence data revealed that Pseudomonas spp., were dominant (58%, n = 29) among isolated bacteria followed by Staphylococcus spp., (22%, n = 11), Escherichia coli (14%, n = 7) and Proteus spp., (6%, n = 3). Further, bioassay revealed that Pseudomonas spp., and Staphylococcus spp., were most sensitive to Clindamycin (94.73%) while displayed resistant to Ciprofloxacin and Ampicillin. Similarly, E. coli and Proteus spp., were most sensitive to Ciprofloxacin (92.8-95.21%) as compared to the other antibiotics. Moreover, antibacterial activity of cerumen was also assessed against test organisms and its maximum activity was observed against Pseudomonas spp., (90% equivalent to Clindamycin potency) and Staphylococcus spp., (60% equivalent to Amoxicillin potency) while least effective against E. coli (36%) and Proteus spp., (22%). Thus, it was concluded that the antibacterial activity of cerumen might be due to the presence of potential chemicals i.e. flavonoids and terpenoids.
