The numerical model for direct evaporative cooler

Abstract: This paper presents a numerical model for a compact direct-contact cross-flow air/water heat exchanger where evaporating water cools down an air stream, and where an innovatively designed metallic direct evaporative pad enhances air-water interaction. The numerical model implements energy and mass conservation equations of humid air and water in a one-dimensional geometry by applying correlations for heat and mass transfer coefficients. The system of ordinary differential equations is solved by central-finite … Show more

“…Results from mathematical models agree in that the hygrothermal conditions are determinant for the water evaporation rate. Kovačević and Sourbron [69] observe an increase in the water evaporation rate with larger inlet DBT, and He et al [50] notice the same effect also for lower relative humidity. Consequently, Sohani et al [55] notice that water consumption can be excessive for extremely dry conditions of up to 10-20% relative humidity.…”

“…Figure 6 illustrates the schematics of typical evaporative cooling with DEC, IEC, and MEC. EC system is an environment friendly and energy saving technology [40]. In terms of thermal comfort, this system can be a suitable option in hot and arid climates as the relative humidity lies in between the 60 and 70%.…”

“…Despite their potential disadvantages, these systems are still the subject of research. 46 Moreover, this method of air cooling can be used in desiccant air-conditioning (DAC) systems. Sultan et al.…”
