The Number of False Mounting Affects The Quality of Semen in Bulls

Abstract: Bulls in Artificial Insemination (AI) Centres are generally trained with false mounting (FM) activity in order to improve the quality of semen. 360 ejaculates were collected via artificial vagina from twelve bulls. The bulls were subjected to each group according to the number of FM activity (FM-0, FM-1, and FM-2). After the initial examination, samples were diluted and were frozen using a digital freezing machine. Post-thaw quality of sperm was assessed by using a computer assisted sperm analyzer and a photom… Show more

“…In addition, discarding the pre-sperm fraction as in boar semen collection (Goldberg et al 2013 ) could have an effect on the bacterial load. Furthermore, allowing the male to make several false mounts before collecting the semen, as in bull semen collection (Şahin et al, 2020 ) should, theoretically, help to flush bacteria out of the urethra before the ejaculate is collected. However, this practice is seldom used when collecting stallion semen.…”

“…12.2. software version was used to perform the analysis of motility. Sperm motility features were assessed at 30 frames/s and 60 Hz; spermatozoa with straight line velocity (VSL) 70% and average path velocity (VAP) 50 μm/s were classified as progressive by using an objective at 37°C and 10× magnification and using a 5 μL post‐thawed semen sample on a prewarmed 20 μm‐deep semen analysis Leja 4‐chamber slide (Leja) (Şahi̇n et al, 2020).…”

“…Other kinematics values, namely VAP (µm/s), VSL (µm/s), curvilinear velocity (VCL, µm/s), linearity [LIN = (VSL/ VCL) × 100], straightness [STR = (VSL/VAP) × 100], the amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH, µm), and beat-cross frequency (BCF, Hz), were also evaluated and expressed with their units. Approximately 400 spermatozoa per sample were evaluated in five microscopic fields (5,28).…”
