The Nuclear Envelope – Structure and Protein Interactions

Abstract: The proteins of the nuclear envelope have been characteriszd in detail in non‐plant systems, revealing a complex series of interactions between the inner and outer nuclear envelope, with the proteins of the nuclear pore complex and connecting to the nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton. Many of the proteins described in animal and fungal systems have not been identified in plants; however, recent advances have resulted in the description of several key plant nuclear envelope proteins including members of the Sad1/U… Show more

“…The nucleus itself is a dynamic structure, organized largely by its enclosing membrane system - the nuclear envelope (NE). The NE is a double-membraned structure composed of an outer nuclear membrane (ONM) and an inner nuclear membrane (INM) connected at nuclear pores (reviewed by Hetzer, 2010 ; Graumann and Evans, 2017 ). The functional properties of the NE are mediated by protein complexes linked to myriad cellular and nuclear processes, including cell division and gene expression ( Kim et al, 2015 ; Meier et al, 2017 ; De Magistris and Antonin, 2018 ; Pradillo et al, 2019 ).…”

“…The NE has many functions beyond the one of a simple barrier (Graumann and Evans, 2013;Méjat and Misteli, 2010). It regulates exchanges between the nucleus and the cytoplasm via the nuclear pore complex (Adams and Wente, 2013;Tamura et al, 2010), organises telomeres, connects the centromere to the centrosome during cell division, and bridges nucleus and cytoskeleton via the linker of nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton (LINC) complex (Crisp et al, 2006).…”

“…Nuclear pore complexes (NPC), also known as SUN-KASH (INM Sad1/UNC-84 and Klarsicht/ANC-1/Syne-1 homology) nuclear envelope (NE) bridges are responsible for connecting the nucleoplasm and cytoplasm in eukaryotes (Graumann and Evans 2017;Yang et al 2017;Zhou et al 2012Zhou et al , 2015b. Nuclear transport of immune receptors, signal transducers and transcription factors is an essential regulatory mechanism for immune activation (Gu et al 2016).…”
