The NPC Families Mediate BmNPV Entry

Abstract: Baculovirus is an important biological factor for controlling insect populations and represents a powerful biological tool for gene delivery and expression. However, the host receptor of baculovirus is still unknown.

“…beforetoHIV-1 and HAV both rely on the NPC1-mediated intracellular cholesterol transport pathway for successful infection. The NPC1-mediated intracellular cholesterol transport pathway is essential for the successful infection of HIV-1 and HAV [ 52 54 ].…”

“…These proteins are regarded as cholesterol and lipid carriers and are involved in lipid metabolism, triglyceride accumulation and innate immunity in vertebrates. 10,11 Prior to 2014, several researchers had suggested that NPC 2s might constitute a third class of binding proteins, in addition to OBPs and CSPs owing to their binding affinity for semiochemicals. 12 In the recent decade, an increasing number of studies have supported this hypothesis, and NPC 2s with biased olfactory organ expression have been shown to participate in chemosensory processes by acting as semiochemical carriers.…”

“…Niemann-Pick C2 type (NPC2) proteins are small soluble proteins belonging to the MD-2-related lipid-recognition (ML) family. These proteins are regarded as cholesterol and lipid carriers and are involved in lipid metabolism, triglyceride accumulation and innate immunity in vertebrates. , Prior to 2014, several researchers had suggested that NPC 2s might constitute a third class of binding proteins, in addition to OBPs and CSPs owing to their binding affinity for semiochemicals . In the recent decade, an increasing number of studies have supported this hypothesis, and NPC 2s with biased olfactory organ expression have been shown to participate in chemosensory processes by acting as semiochemical carriers. For example, MmedNPC2, from the parasitoid wasp Microplitis mediator, can bind to cotton plant volatiles such as 4-ethylbenzaldehyde, 3,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde, and β-ionone .…”

“…In mosquitoes, NPC1 was an entry receptor for filoviruses such as Ebola and Marburg viruses (Gold et al, 2020). In silkworm, baculovirus utilizes NPC1 for host entry and escape from the endosomal compartment (Fan et al, 2022; Li et al, 2019).…”
