The Novel Quantitative Assay for Measuring the Antibiofilm Activity of Volatile Compounds (AntiBioVol)

Abstract: Herein, we present a new test, dubbed AntiBioVol, to be used for the quantitative evaluation of antibiofilm activity of volatile compounds in vitro. AntiBioVol is performed in two 24-well plates using a basic microbiological laboratory equipment. To demonstrate AntiBioVol usability, we have scrutinized the activity of volatilized eucalyptus, tea tree, thyme essential oils, and ethanol (used for method suitability testing) against biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. … Show more

“…As a preliminary step in our investigation line, the disc diffusion method was used to screen the efficacy of all essential oils against all scrutinized pathogens. While this method has many disadvantages for the evaluation of liposoluble substances and may lead to biased outcomes, it is still commonly used as the primary screening method of antimicrobial activity of different substances, including essential oils [ 15 , 54 , 55 ].…”

“…Additionally, such factors, such as the method of EO extraction and preservation, are crucial for the content of their active substances [ 13 , 14 ]. Further, as we have indicated in our previous research, there are also significant discrepancies within EOs’ testing methods, translating into high deviations in outcomes [ 15 ].…”
