The novel peptide NbPPI1 identified from Nicotiana benthamiana triggers immune responses and enhances resistance against Phytophthora pathogens

Abstract: In plants, recognition of small secreted peptides, such as damage/danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), regulates diverse processes, including stress and immune responses. Here, we identified an SGPS (Ser-Gly-Pro-Ser) motif-containing peptide, Nicotiana tabacum NtPROPPI, and its two homologs in Nicotiana benthamiana, NbPROPPI1 and NbPROPPI2. Phytophthora parasitica infection and salicylic acid (SA) treatment induced NbPROPPI1/2 expression. Moreover, SignalP predicted that the 89-amino acid NtPROPPI inc… Show more

“…47 Peptide ligands, functioning as DAMPs, are small endogenous signals that activate immune responses against infection or facilitate repair of damaged tissue. 84 These regulatory peptides are also named as plant cytokines, 85 including plant elicitor peptides (Peps), PAMPs-induced peptides (PIPs), and the newly discovered serine-rich endogenous peptides (SCOOPs), all of them consisting of ∼20 amino acids. 86 During signaling, Pep1, 87 PIP1, 88 and SCOOP12 89 partly depend on BAK1.…”

“…Conversely, BES1 directly interacts with and inhibits ABI5, or indirectly reduces ABI5 expression to deacetylate ABI3 chromatin. , In rice, OsREM4.1 induced by ABA-signaling transcriptional activator OsbZIP23 is found to interact with OsSERK1 and competitively inhibit the interaction of OsREM4.1 with BRI1, which leads to repressing BRs signaling . A recent study reveals that ABA can activate the BRs signal in a short time, caused by OsGSR1 (encoding by the GAST family gene in rice) regulating BRs biosynthesis . A simplified model of crosstalk between the BRs signal the and ABA signal is shown in Figure .…”

“…Reactive oxygen species accumulation is an important signal of early plant immune response as well as regulator of plant defense-related gene expression (Li et al, 2019;Wen et al, 2021). Here, the relationship between PyolNLP5mediated plant resistance and ROS accumulation was explored by DAB staining.…”
