The novel method to reduce the silica content in lignin recovered from black liquor originating from rice straw

Abstract: Difficulties in the production of lignin from rice straw because of high silica content in the recovered lignin reduce its recovery yield and applications as bio-fuel and aromatic chemicals. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a novel method to reduce the silica content in lignin from rice straw more effectively and selectively. The method is established by monitoring the precipitation behavior as well as the chemical structure of precipitate by single-stage acidification at different pH value… Show more

“…The total colour difference (∆E*) of the active lms with respect to the control PLA lm was higher for PLA-SWE180 lms (55.7) than PLA-SWE160 (45.1), while the lowest value was obtained for PLA-USHT lms (36.7). This is coherent with a higher ratio of coloured compounds in the extracts, since many chemicals present in the lignin fraction are responsible for the dark colour in plant matrices (Do et al, 2020). Likewise, the high temperatures and pressures applied in the SWE process could promote browning reactions, such as Maillard and caramelisation reactions, giving rise to more coloured/more intensely coloured extracts, mainly at 180°C, as previously reported (Plaza et al 2010b).…”

“…EDS analysis showed higher levels of silica in RS and SRS, which were reduced upon alkali pre-treatment. The surface of RS contains silica globules, which remain complexed with lignin polymers (Do et al, 2020). Lignin is a significant barrier in the deconstruction of lignocellulose as it reduces the enzymatic accessibility towards the cellulosic and hemicellulosic components.…”

“…However, the "Silicon Interference" of non-wood pulping and the contradiction between the increase in pulp demand and the insufficient capacity of the existing alkali recovery system restrict the development of pulp paper integration. Improving pulp production capacity is the key to expand the treatment capacity of alkali recovery system and reduce the impact of "Silicon Interference" [4][5][6][7][8] . Building a new alkali recovery system is the most direct and effective method, but is bound to increase the production cost of the pulp mill.…”
