“…The notion of traditional circumcision has been found to contribute to the problem of patriarchal domination that affects women ( Kangethe and Nomngcoyiya, 2016 ; Siweya et al., 2018 ). For example, a qualitative study conducted by De Wet et al (2016) on the behaviour of male learners who underwent traditional initiation schooling find that high school male leaners who have gone through traditional initiation demonstrate dominance and sexist attitudes towards their female teachers whom they perceive inferior because of their status as women.…”

“…Considerably, the condition appears to impact negatively on a majority of the affected men’s virility ( Achempim-Ansong & Donkor, 2012 ; Kerklaan et al, 2020 ; Lin et al, 2005 ; Reid et al, 2016 ). Loss of virility taken together with failure to be a provider diminish affected men’s sense of manhood, therefore, triggering an existential crisis ( Bailey et al, 2018 ; Douglas & Maluleke, 2018 ; Khunou, 2013 ; Siweya et al, 2018 ).…”

“…The decision to do so is “influenced by social structures which promote TMC as the best acceptable practice” and, thus, young men opt for it ( Douglas & Hongoro, 2018 : 64). Limited research on TMC in Limpopo is a challenge ( Sedibe, 2019 ; Siweya et al, 2018 ). The present study addresses this gap using the case study of Simon, a young Black man aged 25 who underwent TMC as a 12-year-old adolescent in a rural village in Limpopo.…”
