The Not‐So‐Hidden Costs of Surgical Site Infections

Abstract: Surgical site infections (SSIs) adversely affect approximately 500,000 patients annually, causing immense human suffering and taking a huge financial toll on patients, hospitals, insurance companies, and the government. National organizations have made recommendations for reducing SSIs, and many advances have been made in evidence-based practice recommendations that result in fewer SSIs. Reusable electrocardiogram (ECG) lead wires can be a significant source of infection. One medical center near Richmond, VA, … Show more

“…In the literature, clinicians suggested that reusable ECG-LWs might lead to cross-contamination of microorganisms, including resistant bacteria, and be a culprit in HAIs. 15,21,22 Our findings represent new knowledge and provide evidence that reusable ECG-LWs are not more likely to be a source of pathogens that lead to HAIs. Further, our cardiovascular surgery ICUs cleaned reusable ECG-LWs by ultrasound.…”

“…Patients that develop a SSI are up to 60% more likely to spend time in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where care is costly for both the patient and hospital (Barnett, 2007). The patient with a SSI is five times more likely to be readmitted to the hospital (Fry & Fry, 2007), and 77% of deaths among patients with a SSI are directly attributable to the SSI.…”

“…Most estimates are based on inpatient costs and do not account for the additional costs of rehospitalization, post-discharge outpatient expenses, and any long term disabilities (Barnett, 2007). SSis pose a substantial clinical burden (Owens & Stoessel, 2008 The mean extra hospital duration was 6.5 days, and in a SSI involving organs or body space, there was even a longer hospital duration and increased costs compared with a SSI that only involved the incision or was superficial in nature.…”

“…2 Contaminated ECG lead wires may be a contributing factor to the development of surgical site infections. 3,4 ECG lead wires that lie directly on the patient's skin are near open wounds on the chest and surgical incisions. The potential for cross-contamination from an unclean ECG lead wire to the surgical site is of great concern.…”
