The northwest african depressions affecting the south balkans

Abstract: This paper deals with the north-west African or the Atlas depressions, named after the region of their formation. The subject is examined from the synoptic climatology point of view, and is based on mean sea level (M.S.L.) pressure and 500 hectopascal (hPa) heights of the five consecutive years from 1970 to 1974. Attention is drawn to the following topics.1. The positions of the depression centres are determined when they are generated and afterwards. So the numbers of the occurrence of their centres in the sub… Show more

“…According to the study, winter tracks are oriented northeast to north, characterised by cyclone protrusion to the Mediterranean Sea over the Tunisia area, while spring tracks tend to have a more pronounced eastern advection component. Probably the most extensive work on the description of synoptic conditions associated with NWA depressions was done by PREZERAKOS (1985PREZERAKOS ( , 1990 and PREZERAKOS et al (1990). In these studies, a detailed classification of different types of NWA depressions was established and their main characteristics discussed.…”

“…These patterns start 72 h and end 24 h before the first appearance of the depressions on the 0000 or 12.00 GMT surface charts. The first paper (Prezerakos, 1985b) dealt with the basic characteristics of northwest African depressions, from the time of their generation onward. In that paper, attention was drawn to the following features:…”

“…As is known (Meteorological Office, 1962;Karoulias, 1976;Prezerakos, 1985;Flokas, 1988;Georgiev and Sharov, 1990;Prezerakos, 1991), these depressions appear mainly in spring and affect mostly the weather of the Balkans. The two October cases occurred in second half of October, whereas the August case occurred mid-month as the occurrence date shows.…”
