The non-indigenous Paranthura japonica Richardson, 1909 (Isopoda: Anthuroidea: Paranthuridae) from the Mar Piccolo lagoon, Taranto (Italy, Mediterranean Sea)

Abstract: Several individuals of Paranthura japonica, a non-indigenous isopod species, recently recorded on Italian coasts, have been collected from the Mar Piccolo basin, Taranto (Italy). This finding extends the distributional range of the species southwards in the Mediterranean, including a semi-enclosed coastal basin, which is considered the second Italian hotspot for the introduction of alien species. The characteristics of the place reinforce the hypothesis that its introduction is linked to shellfish trade and fa… Show more

“…Taxonomical remarks: the specimens match the descriptions by Richardson (1909) , redescriptions by Nunomura (1975) , Lavesque et al (2013) and Lorenti et al (2016) . They display stinging mouthparts, typical of the family Paranthuridae ( Fig.…”

“…1K ); pereonite 6 shorter than pereonite 5; short pleotelson barely exceeding the tip of uropods; and particularly, semi-segmented pleon, with pleonites fused in the middle of their dorsal region but distinct at their sides, which allow to clearly identify P. japonica ( Fig. 1J ) ( Lavesque et al, 2013 ; Lorenti et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Its first Mediterranean records occurred only recently; between 2010 and 2012 it was found in numerous localities around Italy: the Lagoon of Venice, La Spezia and Olbia harbors ( Marchini et al, 2014 ), and Taranto ( Lorenti et al, 2015 ). Next, it was found in La Grande-Motte, France ( Marchini, Ferrario & Minchin, 2015 ) and then in Tunisia and Greece ( Tempesti, Langeneck & Castelli, 2016 ).…”

“…In the last two papers, a different type of threat to this particular ecosystem is considered, i.e., the biological contamination caused by the presence of non-indigenous species in the Taranto Seas that have been introduced by shipping and shellfish importation. The article by Lorenti et al (2015) is devoted to a non-indigenous isopod species, Paranthura japonica, collected also from the Mar Piccolo in 2013, whereas in the review by Cecere et al (2015), the main activities and vectors responsible for the introduction of non-indigenous species are identified through the analysis of 135 questionnaires compiled by different categories of local stakeholders.…”
