“…The shifts in GC content correspond to the location of repeated elements that are flanked by insertion sequences or tRNAs (Figures 1 and 6 ). The constitutively expressed nod D gene (AZC_3792) [ 45 , 46 ] codes for a LysR-type regulator that activates transcription of the two other flavonoid-inducible nod loci. The inducible operon nod ABCSUIJZ noe CHOP (AZC_3818-AZC_3807) [ 47 - 49 ] encodes most of the enzymatic machinery for NF backbone synthesis, decoration, and secretion.…”

“…We believe that A. caulinodans acquired its nod genes from a Bradyrhizobium, Rhizobium or Sinorhizobium strain by horizontal gene transfer because the GC content of the nod genes is lower than that of the genome and because nod genes are flanked by repetitive elements (Goethals et al, 1992a;Geelen et al, 1995b). The low GC content of the nodABCSUIJZnoeC operon extends until the border of the known sequence and no repetitive element was found in this sequence.…”

“…Rhizobium leguminosarum and Azorhizobium caulinodans secreted by type I secretion systems were found to be cell-surface associated (Geelen et al, 1995 ;Mateos et al, 1992). Therefore, we investigated whether ExpE1 can also become attached to the outer membrane of the cell.…”
