«En la bañera del rey Ching-tang se hallaba grabada la siguiente inscripción: Renuévate totalmente cada día, luego vuelve a renovarte, renuévate sin cesar, y siempre sigue renovándo-te». Confucio. Los cuatro libros clásicos. Bruguera, 1975, p. 48.Resumen: Constatado el incremento de las publicaciones sobre catalogación a nivel internacional, se ha emprendido una revisión bibliográfica general para ofrecer una panorámica sobre la caracterización de la catalogación en nuestros días, derivada de algunos de los temas de las referencias bibliográficas analizadas. Se han practicado búsquedas en los principales catálogos y redes bibliotecarias españolas (BN, REBIUN, CSIC, …) y en la base de datos LISA, que han proporcionado referencias de monografías y artículos de revistas profesionales. Otros recursos proceden de Internet. En total se ha trabajado con 492 referencias de las que, finalmente, se han analizado unas 100. Con todos ellos se ha preparado esta exposición simple, y cualitativa, con los objetivos, principios y rasgos característicos de esta disciplina.Como resultados se destacan: sintetizar la caracterización teórica y prácti-ca de la catalogación, enumerar sus puntos de tensión y señalar su proyección de futuro a partir de dotar de una estructura lógica los nuevos códigos catalográficos, que, necesariamente, deberán ser más concisos y pragmáticos; y sobre la base de los desarrollos que se operan en el control de autoridad bibliográfico.Las conclusiones de esta investigación serían: expertos de distintos países revisan los presupuestos teóricos y prácticos de la catalogación, ésta se renueva con los nuevos recursos y posibilidades tecnológicas y por efecto de los dos hechos anteriores, se revela como un medio de gestión y organización del conocimiento que hoy se presenta en Internet. Abstract:Once verified the increment of the publications about cataloguing at international level, a general bibliographical revision has been undertaken to offer a panoramic about the characterization of cataloguing in our days, derived from some of the topics of the bibliographical references analyzed. ABSTRACT. In this empirical study of a sample of catalog records I investigate the implications for information retrieval of the rules for choosing author access points in online catalogs. Aims: To obtain data that can be used to inform a revision of current cataloguing rules, and to propose more functional criteria aimed at improving the retrieval of information located on the basis of author names. Material and methods: A total of 838 records from the Biblioteca Nacional Española (Spanish National Library) were examined to analyze the use of authorities as access points. Authors were classified as creative or non-creative to facilitate the analysis. The variables investigated were author source location, potential author access points, actual entries used in the record, and loss of potential entry points. Results: A total of 3566 potential author access points were identified (mean of 4.25 per record). The title page yielded 57.3% of all potential access points, the table of contents yielded 33.5%, and other sources accounted for the remaining 9.1%. A total of 2125 potential authors were not used as access points in the records (overall loss of 59.5%). A total of 960 authors named on the title page were not used as entries (30.23% loss). In works with up to three authors per responsibility function, 24.8% of the authors were not used as entry points.
