The Nexus Among Economic Growth, Inflation and Unemployment in Bhutan

Abstract: In order to understand the dynamics of unemployment in Bhutan at a macro-level, this study has explored the association among economic growth, inflation and unemployment from 1998 to 2016. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model was applied to estimate the impact of economic growth and inflation on unemployment. The results of this empirical analysis suggest that economic growth had no impact on the reduction of unemployment rate in Bhutan both in the short and in the long run. In fact, as the economic… Show more

“…This is contrary to Phillips curve hypothesis. Although results of some recent studies (such as, Berentsen, Menzio, and Wright, 2011;Umoru and Anyiwe, 2013;Folawewo and Adeboje, 2017;Tenzin, 2019) show positive impact of inflation on unemployment, findings of Feldmann (2013) indicate validity of Phillips curve hypothesis for 78 countries. Regardless of the reason for the continuous increase in prices (i.e., cost-push or demand-pull), inflation may cause real wage declines, decrease aggregate supply and employment level because of decline in labor supply.…”

“…Employing the ARDL bounds test, the empirical findings demonstrated that there was a negative significant connection between unemployment vs. economic growth both in the short and long-run. To understand the unemployment-economic growth nexus in Bhutan, a study carried out by Tenzin (2019) examined the connection between unemployment, economic growth, and inflation over the 1998-2016 period. Applying the ARDL specification to cointegration, the findings suggested that there was no connection between economic growth-unemployment both in the short and long-run.…”

“…On the other side, Tenzin (2019) believes that unemployment does play a significant role as an economic indicator. He believes that it is due to cyclical unemployment conditions, whereby companies are still maintaining the number of staffs in any financial situation.…”
