The measurement of negative gauge pressure is a field of increasing importance in science and industry. One of the main aims of the EMPIR Joint Research Project 14IND 06 pres2vac is to develop guidelines for it. We present a comparison of three different methods for measuring negative gauge pressure: (i) using two absolute pressure measuring instruments, (ii) generating a negative gauge pressure in the bell jar of the pressure balance, and (iii) using a 'hanging piston' pressure balance. The advantages and drawbacks are discussed and some preliminary results presented.

The report summarizes the Consultative Committee for Mass (CCM) key comparison CCM.P-K4.2012 for absolute pressure spanning the range of 1 Pa to 10 000 Pa. The comparison was carried out at six National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), including National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Czech Metrology Institute (CMI), National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ), Centro Nacional de Metrología (CENAM), and DI Mendeleyev Institute for Metrology (VNIIM). The comparison was made via a calibrated transfer standard measured at each of the NMIs facilities using their laboratory standard during the period May 2012 to September 2013. The transfer package constructed for this comparison preformed as designed and provided a stable artifact to compare laboratory standards. Overall the participants were found to be statistically equivalent to the key comparison reference value.

A bilateral comparison was carried out in order to test the degree of equivalence between the newly established pressure balances of the Czech Metrological Institute and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). The comparison was carried out without using a transfer standard, but with a differential capacitance diaphragm gauge as an indicator of the small differential pressure between the two pressure balances when the target pressures were generated in the two systems. The Czech Metrological Institute brought its force balanced piston gauge FPG by the DHI company to the site of the PTB pressure balance, which was a Furness Rosenberg system FRS 5 by the Furness company. In the range under comparison from 30 Pa to 7000 Pa full equivalence was obtained with the En value ranging from 0.01 to 0.47.Main text. To reach the main text of this paper, click on Final Report.
