The New Jersey Toxics Reduction Workplan for Ny-Nj Harbor: Distribution of Pcdd/Fs in Ambient Waters

Abstract: As part of the NJ Toxics Reduction Workplan for NY-NJ Harbor, ambient water samples were collected at fifteen locations along the tidal portions of the Hackensack, Passaic, Raritan, Rahway and Elizabeth Rivers, and in Newark Bay, the Arthur Kill, and Kill van Kull. A Trace Organics Platform Sampler was used to collect a total of 75 suspended sediment phase samples between June 2000 and May 2002. These samples were analyzed for spatial and wet vs. dry weather trends in the 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins a… Show more

“…Newark Bay sediment concentrations of total polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and furans were reported to be 0.8 – 9.3 ng/g (parts per billion) and 0.2 – 3.7 ng/g, respectively (Dimou and Pecchioli, 2006). Total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments have been measured to be 44,000 and 756 ng/g, respectively (Huntley et al ., 1995; Panero et al ., 2005).…”

“…The preliminary investigation indicated that samples containing the particulate fraction (i.e., biosolids, suspended particles from water, and whole water samples) exhibited a common set of PCDD/F fingerprints, while samples of the dissolved phase (sampled using XAD2 resin) displayed very different PCDD/F congener patterns. This difference can be attributed to the partitioning of PCBs and PCDD/Fs between the dissolved and particle phases . Therefore, dissolved phase (XAD2) samples were excluded from the data matrix.…”
