The new genusTalacastospongia: insights on the first record of a Devonian sponge from South America

Abstract: The Lower Devonian (Lochkovian) hexactinellid sponge Talacastospongia minima new genus new species is reported from the lower beds of the Talacasto Formation in the Argentine Precordillera. It represents the first Devonian sponge from South America and the best record in the paleobiogeographic context of the Malvinokaffric Realm, otherwise virtually devoid of spiculate sponges. This discovery provides some tentative insights on the age and oldest record of the Family Pileolitidae. The paleogeographical context… Show more

“…Indeed, Pontagrossia reticulata gen. et sp. nov. is similar in form to fossils of known articulated South American Paleozoic sponges (Carrera, 1994;Carrera & Ortega, 2009;Carrera & Rustán, 2015;Carrera et al, 2018;Mouro et al, 2014). However, P. reticulata gen. et sp.…”

“…Some studies, such as that of Bignon and Crônier (2013), were able to use greater stratigraphic resolution, especially for the Emsian interval, but because we were considering taxa distributed across several continents, we were not able to subdivide the Emsian or other stages to a finer scale. Geographic areas used generally correspond to broad areas of endemism and biogeographic regions identified in numerous previous studies of Devonian paleogeography (e.g., Lieberman and Eldredge 1996; Scotese et al 1999; Rode and Lieberman 2005; Carrera and Rustán 2015; Dowding and Ebach 2018, 2019; Bault et al 2022b). However, we refer to the region “Europe” only for heuristic purposes and in reference to the modern day (involving fossils distributed in what are today parts of western and central Europe, including Belgium, France, Germany, and Spain), as in the Siluro-Devonian these comprised a set of different terranes.…”

“…100 m. The paleobiological content includes a rich association of marine invertebrates, largely brachiopods (Fig. 3i) linked to the Malvinokaffric fauna (Baldis and Rossi de García 1972;Amos and Boucot 1963;Herrera 1993Herrera , 1995aLevy and Nullo 1970a, b;Racheboeuf and Herrera 1994;Racheboeuf et al 1998;Sánchez et al 1991;Rustán and Vaccari 2010;Carrera and Rustán 2015;Salas et al 2013). Based on brachiopods Sánchez et al (1991) and Herrera (1993) assigned an early Lochkovian age to the base of the unit (Fig.…”
