The New Determination of the ηN S-wave Scattering Length From a Three-Channel, Multi-Resonance Amplitude Analysis

Abstract: A three-channel, multi-resonance, unitary model developed in 1995 is used to determine the πN → ηN and ηN → ηN amplitudes by re-analyzing the available data on πN elastic scattering and the weighted data for the πN → ηN total and differential cross sections. The input πN elastic scattering amplitude in the S11 channel has been improved, following suggestions of G. Höhler. Our new result of ηN scattering length, aηN = (0.717±0.030)+i · (0.263±0.025) fm, suggests that the ηd system is unbound or loosely bound.

“…This value was obtained in [7] using a phenomenological analysis of the coupled channels πN, ππN, ηN and γN , and is in close agreement with other recent results for low-energy ηN -scattering [30]. In order to complete the formal part, we only have to generalize our formalism to add also spin-isospin degrees of freedom.…”

“…[25] a large scattering length a ηN = 0.75(4) + i0.27(3)f m was found, and in addition the effective range expansion was shown to work well in a broad region of both positive and negative energies. A very similar value of a ηN = 0.72(3) + i0.26(2)f m was obtained in a dispersion theoretic analysis of reference [26]. However, further studies [27] of the K-matrix model done in the spirit of Ref.…”
