“…Historically, LGBTQ+ people's life experiences in Alabama were connected to a large portion of the state's problematic geographic location in the Appalachian area. This area encountered harsh circumstances of marginalization and declining economic, social, and cultural circumstances that negatively influenced its residents (Appalachian Regional Commission, 2003; Bishop et al, 2016; Eller, 2008; Kotch, 2005; Mehra et al, 2012; Skinner & Slifkin, 2007). Of the 420 Appalachian counties, the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) (2018) recognized 84 counties as economically anguished, 115 as economically at‐risk, and 208 were transitional.…”

“…The view of Appalachian society as an example of premodern Anglo-Saxon heritage played an important role in the commercialization of its traditions and the organization of society around large-scale industrial development strategies (Becker 1998;Davis and Baker 2014;Eller 2008;Gaventa 1980;Lewis, Johnson and Adkins, 1978;Shapiro 1978) mountain cultures adapt to deforestation and other large-scale land use patterns.…”

“…The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), for instance, represents one of the largest development projects in modern history. The outcomes of TVA and other centralized planning shaped highland land use around resource extraction, hydroelectric dams, federal parks, and urban growth centers (Cole 1948;Eller 2008;Whisnant 1983). While focusing on improvements in farming, depression era federal programs promoted crops supporting industrial agriculture and market integration.…”

“…Although U.S. coal production quantities did not start to decline until the early 2000s, Appalachian coal employment has been waning for about a century. This long-term decline in employment has been driven largely by supply-side factors, as technological developments allowed coal mining firms to maintain high production with fewer coal workers (Eller, 2008). Air quality regulation in the 1990s further reduced Appalachian coal mining employment by inducing a shift to low-sulfur coal mined in the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, which is more capital intensive than the generally highersulfur coal found in Appalachia (Carlson, Burtraw, Cropper, and Palmer (2000)).…”
