The Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio Correlates with Age in Patients with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and clinicopathological features in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Methods: We performed an analysis of 843 patients, including 321 patients with PTC, 83 patients with thyroid adenoma and 439 patients with nodular goiter (NG). Thyroglobulin and thyrotropin were measured in each patient. Neutrophils, lymphocytes, and platelets were counted. Statistical analysis was used to correlate the N… Show more

“…This serves as a well-established biomarker of subclinical atherosclerosis, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and thus can be used to predict cardiovascular events. 25 The NLR has been reported to be a potential biomarker of inflammation in tumours, 26,27 cardiovascular conditions 28 and diabetes and its complications. 29,30 The precise mechanisms that lead to this higher level of NLR in DM are not quite clear, but Li et al 25 claim that it might be a result of inflammatory responses.…”

“…Despite these limitations, our study has several potential strengths. Whereas previous studies covered a broad thyroid cancer spectrum from differentiated thyroid cancer to anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, [12][13][14][15] our study investigated only conventional PTCs.…”

“…10) Among these inflammatory parameters, the pretreatment high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been especially associated with adverse outcomes in various cancer entities. 11) In patients with thyroid cancers, a higher NLR has been associated with larger tumor size, 12,13) high stage, 14) old age, 13,14) and poorer differentiated cancer. 15) Therefore, we investigated whether preoperative NLR is associated with poor prognostic outcomes in conventional PTCs (cPTCs) which comprises the majority of thyroid malignancies.…”
