The neuropsychiatric manifestations of Lyme borreliosis

Abstract: Lyme borreliosis (Lyme disease), a tick-borne spirochetal illness, has multisystemic involvement and is rapidly increasing in certain areas of the United States. Although its neurologic manifestations are becoming increasingly well recognized, its psychiatric presentations are not well known. “…Although a percentage of the control group had mildly reduced LDLs, none showed the dramatically reduced levels shown by the PTLDS patients. Three studies support the notion that our cohort of patients exhibited hyperacusis consistent with Lyme Disease (Fallon, et al, 1992;Goldstein & Shulman, 1996;Nields, Fallon, & Jastreboff, 1999). Goldstein and Shulman (1996) defined hyperacusis as Յ90 dB at 2 frequencies or Յ 95 dB at a single frequency.…”

Hypersensitivity to auditory, visual, tactile, gustatory (taste) and olfactory (smell) systems has been reported (Fallon, Nields, Burrascano, Liegner, DelBene, & Liebowitz, 1992).…”

“…D'autres manifestations comme les polyneuropathies motrices ou sensitives isolées [6,7], les mononévrites [8], les méningites lymphocytaires [9,10] sont banales. De rares cas d'encéphalites ou d'encéphalomyélites ont été rapportés où la causalité de l'agent bactérien n'a pas toujours été démon-trée [10][11][12][13]. Les complications neurologiques apparaissent chez 10 à 40 % des patients présentant une maladie de Lyme [9,14,15].…”

“…Schizophrenia and rheumatoid arthritis are both chronic relapsing diseases of unknown etiology (Torrey & Yolken 2001). Lyme borreliosis is a tick-borne infection in humans which is associated with atypical presentations of psychiatric syndromes with relapsing and remitting progressive deterioration (Fallon et al 1993).…”
