The Neurobehavioral Effects of Buprenorphine and Meloxicam on a Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury Model in the Rat

Abstract: Previous findings have indicated that pain relieving medications such as opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be neuroprotective after traumatic brain injury in rodents, but only limited studies have been performed in a blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) model. In addition, many pre-clinical TBI studies performed in rodents did not use analgesics due to the possibility of neuroprotection or other changes in cognitive, behavioral, and pathology outcomes. To examine this in a p… Show more

“…The dose and regimen of BPN in the present study did not induce significant prolonged weight loss in male and female mice. These results are consistent with a recent study, in which BPN treatment decreased weight loss in a blast-induced rat model of TBI ( Anderson et al, 2021 ). Buprenorphine can also affect body weight through KOR-mediated energy homeostasis and energy expenditure ( Cintron-Colon et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Clinical observations indicate the presence of people affected by the explosion with various types of memory impairment, lack of learning ability, changes in emotionality, which are directly related to the specific mechanism of brain damage as a result of the action of the blast wave [12][13][14]. The our study results clearly indicate an impairment of spatial memory in particular.…”

“…Клінічними ознаками легкої ВІТГМ є різноманітні психіатричні захворювання, в тому числі посттравматичний стресовий розлад, депресія, тривога, агресивність, апатія, порушення пам'яті та ін. Симптоми цих захворювань визначаються й при експериментальних дослідженнях [9,10]. Зокрема, установлені тривожність, зміни емоційності, порушення просторової пам'яті [11].…”
