The Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination: A Brief But Differentiated Approach to Cognitive Assessment

Abstract: The Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination (NCSE), a screening examination that assesses cognition in a brief but quantitative fashion, uses independent tests to evaluate functioning within five major cognitive ability areas: language, constructions, memory, calculations, and reasoning. The examination separately assesses level of consciousness, orientation, and attention. This instrument quickly identifies intact areas of functioning, yet provides more detailed assessment in areas of dysfunction. Standa… Show more

“…There were few brief, valid, and reliable instruments for assessing cognitive functioning by non-trained clinicians in clinical practice. At present, there are specific neuropsychological batteries available for schizophrenia and other psychoses, such as the Cognistat (Kiernan et al, 1987), before 1995 known as the Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination; the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) (Randolph et al, 1998); the Woodcock-Johnson III Test of Cognitive Abilities (Woodcock et al, 2001); and the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) (Keefe et al, 2004;Segarra et al, 2010). Despite the fact that these instruments have excellent psychometric properties, their administration is quite time-consuming (more than 30 min), diminishing its utility in psychiatric practice.…”

“…Metodika testu je natolik zřejmá, že by případné vysvětlování mohlo být nadbytečné, bližší informace o vývoji metody a výběru jednotlivých položek by ovšem přesto byly na místě. Ve studii autorů, která není součástí manuálu, je dostupná jen obecná informace o postupných změnách nejednoznačných nebo matoucích položek testu (Kiernan et al, 1987).…”
