The Neural Basis of the Dynamic Unconscious

Abstract: A great deal of complex cognitive processing occurs at the unconscious level and affects how humans behave, think, and feel. Scientists are only now beginning to understand how this occurs on the neural level. Understanding the neural basis of consciousness requires an account of the neural mechanisms that underlie both conscious and unconscious thought, and their dynamic interaction. For example, how do conscious impulses, thoughts, or desires become unconscious (e.g., repression) or, conversely, how do uncon… Show more

“…S -C-R model of human behavior is closely related to the model of "operant conditioning" (Berlin, 2011) that argues the best way to understand behavior is by observing the cause (cognition) of an action (stimulus) and its consequence (response). Iso-Ahola (1982) describes the S -C-R model as influenced by inputs and the relevant behavior.…”

“…Neuroscience research on the limits of conscious perception provides fresh evidence for non-conscious processes and the large influence of it in our daily life (Berlin, 2011). A further step taken by Limar's (2011) framework is to engage with the hypothesis that molecular orbitals (electron shells) of molecules, biologically active during meiosis and mitosis are in some way material carriers of consciousness.…”

“…Fotopoulou, 2012c). In addition, mainstream investigators in cognitive neuroscience have increasingly turned their attention to the neurobiological basis of dynamically unconscious processes and their cognitive control (see Berlin, 2011;Fotopoulou, 2012c for reviews). Whereas in previous decades such progress was dominated by behaviourism and cognitive science in psychology, functionalism and computationalism in neurophilosophy, and reductionism in neurobiology and genetics, these paradigms are fast losing their popularity within the neurosciences.…”
