The Nesbit operation for congenital curvature of the penis

Abstract: Objective: To assess the results of the correction of congenital penile curvature using the Nesbit operation. Patients and methods: The records of 106 patients who had a Nesbit operation to correct a congenital penile curvature between 1977 and 1992 were reviewed. Results: An excellent (78.3%) or satisfactory (17.9%) result was achieved representing an overall success rate of 96.2%. “…30 In the setting of a ventral curvature, once Buck's fascia has been elevated, small wedges of the contralateral dorsal tunica albuginea are excised and then the defect is closed, typically with permanent suture. Variations on this approach have evolved, including the Yachia procedure, which utilizes the Heineke-Mikulicz technique.…”

“…Currently available surgical options in PD include tunical plication procedures such as the Nesbit wedge resection and the various plication modifications, which are performed on the convex side of the penis. The first reported technique was the Nesbit procedure, which entails excision of a piece of the tunica albuginea on the contralateral side of the curvature [12,13]. Since then, modified Nesbit, Yachia, Essed-Schroeder, Duckett-BaskinLevine, and 16-dot or 24-dot plication techniques have been reported [8,[14][15][16][17].…”

“…8 Reported complications (13%) included urinary retention (one patient), wound infection (®ve), suture granuloma (two), painful knot (one), glans numbness (two), phimosis (two), and haematoma (one). 9 Yachia (1994) reported four cases of loss of sensation Ð one of which was permanent Ð in cases corrected by the Nesbit procedure. 10 Describing experience with different corporoplasty techniques for the correction of congenital penile curvature, the author expressed the opinion that correction of these deformities should be concentrated in the hands of a small group of surgeons in specialized centers.…”
