The NEREUS in‐lake wireless/acoustic chemical data network

Abstract: We describe a system for the semi-autonomous in situ measurement of lake chemical properties, with high temporal resolution and the potential to map chemical properties in 3 dimensions. The system comprises both fixed sensor locations on moored buoys and one (or potentially more) autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) serving as mobile underwater sensor platforms. Sensors include conventional water quality multiprobes and thermistor strings and the NEREUS underwater mass spectrometer for measurement of dissolve… Show more

“…All data are logged aboard the AUV; in addition, current calibration, system monitoring parameters, and data for up to ten chemical species of interest can be transferred via acoustic modem in real time, such as for mission monitoring. Additional details concerning underwater data transmission are provided in Hemond et al [12].…”

“…The advent of membrane inlet technology has facilitated autonomous mass spectrometer operation for analysis of volatile halocarbons such as methane (Schluter and Gentz, 2008) and toluene (Short et al, 2006). Engineering progress has made the platforms robust for extended field deployment, including continuous operation at fixed buoys or on autonomous underwater vehicles for spatial mapping (Hemond et al, 2008). Though still in its infancy, autonomous mass spectrometry seems promising for ASTs directed at organic contaminants in aquatic systems.…”
