The Neotropical genus Eudexia Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889 (Tachinidae: Dexiinae: Dexiini): lectotype fixation for the type species, synonymy, and a new species from Brazil

Abstract: Eudexia Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889, a Dexiini genus restricted to the Neotropical Region, is revised with proposal of the following new synonymies: Chaetocalirrhoe Townsend, 1935 = Eudexia, syn. nov. and Cordillerodexia Townsend, 1927 = Eudexia, syn. nov. As a result, the following new combinations are proposed: Eudexia brevicornis (Macquart, 1851), comb. nov., Eudexia colombiana (Townsend, 1929), comb. nov., Eudexia grandis (Townsend, 1935), comb. nov., and Eudexia orientalis (Townsend, 1927), comb. nov. … Show more

“…He usually provided information about morphology, distribution, taxonomy, collector(s) and any host records available for a particular species (e.g., Cortés 1986). More recently, this trend was followed, and from the last, approximately 20 years, witnessed new taxonomic papers that increased the knowledge of the Neotropical Dexiini: the revision of Prophorostoma Townsend, 1927 (Nihei & Pansonato 2006), with the description of a new species P. tomjobimi Nihei, 2006; revision of the genus Sturmiodexia Townsend, 1919, with Platyrrhinodexia Townsend, 1927 as a new synonymy (Santis 2022) and the revision of the genus Eudexia Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889 (Santis 2021b), with Chaetocalirrhoe Townsend, 1935 and Cordillerodexia Townsend, 1927 as new synonymies. With these revisions, a new Dexiini was described, Eudexia lopesi Santis, 2021.…”

“…Of those genera, only Comyops and Ebenia are from the Neotropical region. Although the overall trend of tachinids from this region is being poorly known (see, e.g., Santis 2021 , 2022 ), both genera are an exception due to the redescriptions of some of its species amde by Thompson ( 1963 ). After the works of Townsend ( 1939 ), which placed Comyops and Ebenia in the former tribe Ebeniini together with taxa currently in Palpostomatini (Tachininae) and Voriini (Dexiinae), Thompson ( 1963 ) was the first to hypothesize the possible close relationship between these genera.…”
