The Negative Impact of Blockage on Storm Water Drainage Network

Abstract: Storm water drainage system in urban areas became a deterministic system, especially in light of the current climate changes. This system eliminates the excess water resulting from heavy rainfall, which leads to disruption of daily life. Irregular maintenance of the network system, problems appear, especially the blockage of the covers or network pipes, which affects the efficiency of the network. This study deals with the experimental investigation of blockage on storm network system and the relationship betw… Show more

“…During the solving process, the alternate direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is employed, where u n+1 3) is searched, which is precisely the optimal solution of the variational problem in Equation (2). Accordingly, the signal x(t) is decomposed into k numbers of discrete mode components u(t).…”

“…A blockage is a ubiquitous phenomenon during pipeline operations. In case of slight blockage of the pipe, the blocked area will enlarge continuously over time if timely detection and management are not given, which eventually leads to severe blockage [2]. The severe blockage will compromise the carrying capacity of the pipe and the reliability of the system; will increase the possibility of environmental pollution and the redundancy of the system; and will cause over-pressure of partial pipes in the system to increase the possibility of leakage, thereby ultimately resulting in a serious waste of water resources and environmental pollution.…”

“…However, the stormwater drainage system is highly susceptible to blockages when improperly used and maintained. Fathy et al 34 conducted experimental studies to investigate the discharge capacity of trunk pipes under different levels and lengths of blockages. They found that the discharge capacity of the trunk pipes decreased by 15.11% under conditions where the blockage fill ratio along the pipe was 0.5.…”

“…Structural decentralization strategies reduce the degree of centralization (DC) by reducing the number of elements that are linked and interconnected by releasing stormwater by various outlets to different water bodies locations (see Section 2.2) [10]. Structural resilience is often neglected in the design of UDSs [31][32][33]. However, it can play a significant role in system performance during extreme events.…”
