The Negative Effects of High Rates of Biochar on Violas Can Be Counteracted with Fertilizer

Abstract: Increasing costs and environmental issues regarding excessive use of peat moss is impacting the horticultural industry. Biochar is a valuable substrate additive that has the potential to reduce the use of peatmoss in greenhouse production. However, its varying effects on ornamentals requires that individual species and cultivars of crops must be evaluated to determine the threshold for benefits. Viola cornuta is a high value ornamental crop; however, information on how different rates of biochar rates affect p… Show more

“…BC incorporation into soilless growing media is increasing due to environmental concerns associated with peat use in potted plant production. Incorporating up to 50% BC maintains the growth of containerized plants and reduces peat use ( Regmi et al., 2022 ). Biochar not only improves plant growth and yield under normal, non-stressed conditions but also under different stresses, as discussed in the next section.…”

“…While peat moss has been widely used, there is growing concern about the sustainability of its extraction from peat bogs. As an alternative, compost-based substrates, and other organic materials are being explored as substitutes for peat moss in horticulture [ 32 ]. Vermicompost is one of domestically produced organic substrates that is important in agriculture sector, especially for production of greenhouse products.…”

“…Higher rates of biochar application reduced the crop growth and yield (Kammann et al, 2011). Application of biochar at higher rates (50% w/w) reduces the plant growth and flowering in Viola cornuta (Regmi et al, 2022).…”
