The need of modernizing the general course

Abstract: Why modernize? Because chemistry is a science as well as a practical art. Because theory has a large place in a science. Because the theoretical aspect of chemistry is changing rapidly. The modern theories concerning atomic structure and valence, ionization, and acids, bases, and salts are complementary to each other. The advantage in teaching that may be derived from considering them as the framework for the course is discussed and illustrated. Implied changes in terminology are mentioned. The errors in severa… Show more

“…The seasonal variation in time series data is the most important characteristic and the basis of all seasonal adjustment procedures when building models to fit observation data. Various methods are available for handling seasonal components, such as Seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA), X-11-ARIMA [30] and X-12-ARIMA [31] and X-13ARIMA-SEATS [32], as well as STL (Seasonal-Trend decomposition using Loess), which has been widely used because of its availability in R [33]. However, only few of them afford the clarity, simplicity, and generality required for handling several problems that arise with seasonal data decomposition [34].…”

“…Complex ions of the acid types are treated like acid molecules, but complex ions of the metallic type are best treated separately under "chemistry of the metals" or "qualitative analysis." CONCLUSION Finally, it seems in order to add a comment upon the modernization of elementary chemistry demanded and attempted in various places (4,5,6,7,8,9). The science is expanding so rapidly that textbooks are inevitably years behind.…”

“…Inasmuch as all solvated hydrogen ions, or solvonium ions, are included in the new category of acids it may be well at this point to call attention to the multiplicity of names currently used for the hydrated hydrogen ion. Oxonium ion has been in use for a generation, and is still employed by some authors of today (9). Two newer names are hydronium ion (10) and hydroxonium ion (11).…”
