The Nature of the β-Adrenoreceptor Controlling Plasma Renin Activity in Man

Abstract: 1.Seven healthy sodium-replete male volunteer subjects remained supine during and for at least 1 h before the study. Heart rate and blood pressure were recorded continuously, and peripheral venous blood samples were taken every 15 min for determinations of plasma renin activity.2. All subjects were studied twice: after 3 days of oral practolol(100 mg, three times daily) and after a similar period on placebo. Each study consisted of an intravenous infusion of isoprenaline in graded doses (0-2.0 pg/min in the pl… Show more

“…( 1977) showed recently that renal renin release also depends on activation of a ,B2-adrenergic receptor. A. similar conclusion has been reached for man (Amery et al 1974;Johnson et al 1976). Thc weight sf current evidence suggests that isoproterenol-induczd thirst is mediated via the renin-angioteansin system (Bryant aiad FaIk 1973;Fitzsianons and Simons 1969;Fitzsirno~ms 1969Fitzsirno~ms , 1972Fitzsirno~ms , 1975Gutman et a%.…”

“…Release of renin from the kidney by sympathetic nerve stimulation is blocked by propranolol (Davis and Freeman, 1976), but the /? adrenoceptor that mediates this release has been classified both as /?-l (Johnson et al, 1976) and /?-2 (Johns and Singer, 1974). The /?…”

“…In normal man intravenous infusion of isoprenaline results in a dose-related rise in levels of plasma renin activity (Johnson, Smith, Labrooy & Bye, 1976a;Davies, Slater, Rudolph & Geddes, 1977;Harms, Gooren, Spoelstra, Hesse & Verschoor, 1978). In both tetraplegic patients and control subjects isoprenaline produced a twofold elevation in levels of plasma renin activity.…”
