The Nature of Starbursts. I. The Star Formation Histories of Eighteen Nearby Starburst Dwarf Galaxies

Abstract: We use archival Hubble Space Telescope observations of resolved stellar populations to derive the star formation histories (SFHs) of eighteen nearby starburst dwarf galaxies. In this first paper we present the observations, color-magnitude diagrams, and the SFHs of the eighteen starburst galaxies, based on a homogeneous approach to the data reduction, differential extinction, and treatment of photometric completeness. We adopt a star formation rate (SFR) threshold normalized to the average SFR of the individua… Show more

“…Several definitions of a starburst exist in the literature (e.g., Knapen & James 2009;McQuinn et al 2010;Bergvall et al 2015). The birthrate parameter, b = SFR/ SFR is often used, and compares the current SFR or the peak of the burst to the average SFR over the past Gyr or even the lifetime of the system.…”

“…Episodes of large star formation are intertwined with long quiescent phases. This result is inferred using fitting techniques on integrated galaxy spectra (e.g., Cid Fernandes 2007), color-magnitude diagrams of resolved stellar populations (McQuinn et al 2010a), and statistical arguments involving active and quiescent BCDs (Sánchez Almeida et al 2008). Convulsive SF histories fit in well the cold-flow accretion scenario.…”

“…In particular, dwarf galaxies in nearby groups have been predominantly found to have similar properties to those of our close neighbors (e.g. Karachentsev et al 2002aKarachentsev et al ,b, 2003aKarachentsev et al ,b, 2004Karachentsev et al , 2007Trentham & Tully 2002;Karachentsev 2005;Sharina et al 2008;Bouchard et al 2009;Weisz et al 2008;Côté et al 2009;Dalcanton et al 2009;Koleva et al 2009;McQuinn et al 2009;McQuinn et al 2010;Crnojević et al 2010Crnojević et al , 2011bLianou et al 2010;Makarova et al 2010). A recent Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of dwarf galaxies (ANGST, Weisz et al 2011), comprising about 60 objects located within ∼4 Mpc, has led to a large compilation of color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of their resolved stellar populations.…”
