The Nature of Singlet Exciton Fission in Carotenoid Aggregates

Abstract: Singlet exciton fission allows the fast and efficient generation of two spin triplet states from one photoexcited singlet. It has the potential to improve organic photovoltaics, enabling efficient coupling to the blue to ultraviolet region of the solar spectrum to capture the energy generally lost as waste heat. However, many questions remain about the underlying fission mechanism. The relation between intermolecular geometry and singlet fission rate and yield is poorly understood and remains one of the most s… Show more

“…Finally, a very recent model suggests that the non-interacting T 1 states are directly populated from the absorbing state without the participation of any intermediate electronic state in the process. 62 In the present contribution, we have designed and examined two novel pentacene dimers XC1 and XC2, that feature a cross-conjugated framework to mediate the electronic coupling between the two pentacene moieties. The cross-conjugated structural modification is expected to be particularly helpful as a means to either enhance or attenuate the through bond electronic couplings between the pentacene chromophores.…”

“…In particular, their photophysical properties change dramatically with the environment due to the formation of different types of aggregates. 7,8 As many other carotenoids and chlorophylls, [9][10][11] AXT also forms aggregates when dissolved in hydrated polar solvents. 8,12 The water concentration in these mixtures influences the morphology of the aggregates, and, consequently, their properties.…”

In particular, spectroscopic analysis have shown that their absorption spectra can be blue shifted as well as red shifted compared to that of the isolated monomers depending on the aggregation conditions.…”

“…In the literature, there exist only a few studies which go beyond frontier molecular orbitals approximation [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] . The polyene systems are important model molecules and there are several reports which indicate singlet fission in carotenoids and polyene systems [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] . We start with a wave packet formed from the ground state of one molecule and the singlet excited state of another, these states being the exact eigenstates of the molecule within the chosen model Hamiltonians.…”
