The Nature and Severity of Self-Reported Embarrassing Circumstances

Abstract: To create a comprehensive catalogue of embarrassing predicaments, descriptions of recent embarrassments were obtained from 350 high school and college student respondents. Four major dimensions of embarrassing circumstances emerged, involving individual, interactive, audience, and bystander behavior The respondents' embarrassability predicted the intensity of their embarrassments; in addition, high school students suffered stronger embarrassments than college students, and women reported stronger embarrassment… Show more

“…In relationships, women's accuracy in understanding men's negative humor use may be related to less relationship satisfaction because men are more likely to use humor in ways that women may find socially undesirable (Raniseski, 1998). In addition, women are more prone to experiencing embarrassment in general (Miller, 1992;Sabini, Siepmann, Stein, & Meyerowitz, 2000;Withers & Vernon, 2006). In a study on embarrassment caused by relational partners' actions (i.e., bad dancing), Thorton (2003) found that women were more embarrassed by men's behavior than men were of women's behavior.…”
