“…Czech policy debate on birth care has been influenced by technocratic hegemony (Sommer, 2016), which has pitted individual requirements in care against what is considered good care (see also Dudová, 2012) and which is generally characteristic of post-communist debates on care (see Fábián and Korolczuk, 2017). Individual requirements are typically downplayed in the debate due to the absence both of a radical midwifery movement (Hrešanová, 2017) and of a managerialist healthcare approach, which would tailor care to personal needs (which differs from Anglo-Saxon care concepts as discussed, for example in Stenner and Taylor, 2008: 418). Most importantly, birthing is not permitted outside of maternity hospitals, which have no midwife-led units.…”

“…The interpretive analysis (see Schwartz-Shea and Yanow, 2013) of professional discourses in the Czech debate on birth care examines press releases, strategy papers, and official documents of professional organizations, public administration bodies, and nonprofit organizations up to 2019. The analysis neither attempts to provide an extensive view of the case (for the Czech context see Hrešanová, 2017;Šmídová et al, 2015) nor evaluates the professional conflict between midwives and obstetricians by measuring their respective policy impacts of the actors involved in the debate. Rather, the diametrically opposed uses of emotional experience in professional discourses are analysed, raising the question about the role of emotions in social policies and even beyond.…”

“…Consequently, homebirths that end up in hospital are almost doomed to become traumatic experiences for the birthing mothers. 16 Scholars conducting research in other European countries such as the Czech Republic (Hrešanová 2017), where the government does not approve of or endorse homebirth, have observed similar scenarios and found that when complications arise and homebirthers end up in hospital, they are received with criticism and hostility.…”
