The n_TOF Total Absorption Calorimeter for neutron capture measurements at CERN

Abstract: The n_TOF Collaboration has built and commissioned a high-performance detector for (n, gamma) measurements called the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC). The TAC was especially designed for measuring neutron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples with the accuracy required for nuclear technology and stellar nucleosynthesis. We present a detailed description of the TAC and discuss its overall performance in terms of energy and time resolution, background discrimination, detection efficien… Show more

“…Two complementary setups for neutron capture measurements are used at n TOF, a 4π BaF 2 array [14] acting as a total absorption calorimeter (TAC) for the prompt capture γ rays and a pair of C 6 D 6 liquid scintillators. The present measurement was performed with the C 6 D 6 detectors because their faster response allows covering the complete energy range up to 1 MeV, whereas the longer recovery time after the γ flash is limiting the presently accessible energy range of the TAC below about 20 keV.…”

“…-The measurements of capture reactions on isotopes where the neutron scattering dominates over the capture channels are performed with specially built low neutron sensitivity C 6 D 6 detectors [7], basing the data analysis in the improved accuracy Pulse Height Weighting Technique [8]. -A higher performance in terms of efficiency, multiplicity and background rejection in neutron capture reactions is provided by the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC [9]), a 4 array made of 40 BaF 2 crystals. -In the case of fission reactions, the MicroMegas (MGAS [6]) is also a high performance detector.…”

“…This situation motivated a new measurement of the capture cross-section of 236 U at the CERN n TOF facility [2]. To reduce systematic uncertainties, the measurement was carried out with two independent detection techniques based on a Total Absorption Calorimeter [3] and a pair of C 6 D 6 detectors [4].…”
