Cross sections for (n, a) reactions at 14.7 ± 0.3 MeV on twentyfive stable nuclei of the elements lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium and hafnium have been measured by the activation technique using high-pressure liquid chromatography and high-resolution 7-ray spectroscopy. The cross section shows a strong dependence on the relative neutron excess (N-Z)/A of the target nucleus. Hauser-Feshbach calculations show that the contributions of statistical processes to the total (n, a) cross section are small.
