Unlike the Pauly-Wissowa and the first edition of the The Oxford Classical Dictionary, the latter has a proper lemma 'christianity' since the second edition of 1970. 1 naturally, the two most recent authors, Jill Harries and Gillian clark, also want to inform the readers about early christianity. That is not the best part of this lemma which, like the previous, somewhat pious one by the late William Frend , is better on the later stages than on the beginning of the christian movement. it is obvious that ancient historians have long had trouble in finding ways to integrate christianity into the history of the Roman empire. The best exception to this rule was Robin Lane Fox's attractive Pagans and Christians (1987), although perhaps somewhat more favorable to

This book provides an original and comprehensive assessment of the hypotheses concerning the origin of resurrection Christology. It fills a gap in the literature by addressing these issues using a transdisciplinary approach involving historical-critical study of the New Testament, theology, analytic philosophy, psychology, and comparative religion.Using a novel analytic framework, this book demonstrates that a logically exhaustive list of hypotheses concerning the claims of Jesus' post-mortem appearances and the outcome of Jesus' body can be formulated. It addresses these hypotheses in detail, including sophisticated combinations of hallucination hypothesis with cognitive dissonance; memory distortion; and confirmation bias. Addressing writings from both within and outside of Christianity, it also demonstrates how a comparative religion approach might further illuminate the origins of Christianity.This is a thorough study of arguably the key event in the formation of the Christian faith. As such, it will be of keen interest to theologians, New Testament scholars, philosophers, and scholars of religious studies.

Tacitus ' information about the beginnings of Christianity contains details, which may be historically precise. He learnt them, perhaps, from Christian followers of some other than the received tradition, whom he could have tried during his proconsulship of Asia. Dio ' s account of the trial of Flavius Clemens and others is probably taken from Tacitus, who in his capacity of quindecemvir sacris faciundis could have participated or been interested in the trial. Dio ' s actual formulation of this account omitting Christianity should thus be believed. The implication is that, when treating this affair in his Histories, prior to his sojourn to Asia, Tacitus need not have known anything yet about Christianity, and its beginnings in particular. His information would thus come exclusively from Asia and could be treated as such by modern scholarship.
